Online Therapy for Adults & Families Caring for Family Members and Aging Parents in Florida
You have been losing someone in pieces...
The unexpected illness. The day you took the car keys. The call from the neighbor. The first time you had to help them to the bathroom. The decisions you swore you would never make.
Every one of those was a loss. Nobody prepared you for any of it.
I help adults and families in Florida who are caring for aging parents navigate the stress, exhaustion, and emotional weight that comes with loving someone through this, so you can keep showing up without disappearing in the process
Where are you in this?
You are the one everyone left the decisions to
Family members have opinions but not availability. The calls come to you. The doctors talk to you. The forms have your name on them. At some point you stopped waiting for someone else to step up and started just handling it, because that was easier than the alternative. You did not sign up to do this alone. Here you are.
You have seen things you never expected to see
You have helped them to the bathroom. You have watched them forget your name. You have seen the body or the mind of someone you love stop cooperating in ways you were not prepared for and cannot unsee. Nobody told you this was part of it. Nobody told you what it would cost you. Nobody understand the heartache.
You do not recognize your own life anymore
The role you used to play in this relationship is gone. You are not their child or their spouse in the way you used to be. You are the manager, the decision-maker, the one who holds it together. You did not know how much of your identity lived in who they used to be, or how much this would change you, until it already had.
Nobody told you it would feel like this.
You thought the hardest part would be the logistics. The appointments, the medications, the phone calls, the paperwork. You did not expect caring for an aging parent to change you this much.
You did not expect to feel angry at someone you love. You did not expect to dread the visits and go anyway. You did not expect to lie awake running through decisions you already made, wondering if you got them wrong.
You did not expect to feel this alone in a situation that involves so many other people.
And you did not expect that the hardest losses would be the ones nobody around you even noticed. The version of them that used to know your name. The relationship you had before caregiving started. The life you put on hold that quietly became the life you lost.
Nobody checked on you for any of that. Nobody brought food. Nobody gave you time off. There is no roadmap for caregiver burnout and no one handing them out.
You have been absorbing loss after loss without any of the things that normally help a person get through something hard. And you have been doing it while still showing up, still managing, still holding it together for everyone else.
That is why adults caring for aging parents in Florida reach out. Not because things fell apart. Because they have been holding everything together for so long they forgot they were allowed to put some of it down.
The things you have not said to anyone
That you have thought about how much simpler your life would be.
That you dread the visits, and you go anyway, and you feel sick about both.
That you are angry at your family in a way that will probably outlast your loved one.
That when it does end, some part of you will be relieved, and you already know you will not forgive yourself for that.
That you do not know who you are anymore when nobody needs anything from you.
None of that makes you a bad daughter, or a bad wife, or a bad son. It makes you someone who has been carrying something enormous with almost no help. In caregiver therapyYou can say all of it here.
Who I Work With
Adult children caring for an aging parent. Dementia, Parkinson's, a stroke, cancer, heart failure, a bad fall, or simply eighty-nine years and a body that is done cooperating. The diagnosis matters less to this work than people expect.
Long-distance families and children managing a parent's life from three states away, and feeling guilty about every mile.
Spouses caring for a husband or wife who is no longer the person they married, and never expected this would happen to them.
Individuals in the middle of a difficult decision about care for their loved one that nobody else can make for them.
Individuals whose relationship with the loved one was complicated, which makes all of this harder rather than easier, no matter what anyone tells you.
Support That Meets You Where You Are:
Denise Cummings-Fagan LMHC In Florida
I didn't just learn about burnout and caregiving professionally.
I've lived it.
I watched my parents change in ways I was not prepared for. I made decisions nobody else would make. I kept showing up for them while quietly losing ground myself. I know what it costs to be the one who holds it together.
That perspective shapes how I work.
This isn't surface-level coping.
This is real support, grounded in both experience and clinical expertise.
I'm Denise Cummings-Fagan a licensed mental health counselor in Florida with 35 years of experience supporting adults, families and caregivers who are navigating the stress, burnout, anxiety, and emotional weight of caring for someone they love. Questions Caregivers Ask Before Reaching Out
5
Virtual therapy means there is no commute, no waiting room, and no block of time carved out of an already impossible day. Sessions are 50 minutes, held online, and scheduled around your life. Most clients fit sessions in during a lunch break, after a parent's appointment, or after everyone else has gone to bed. You do not need to have time. You need one hour a week where someone is focused entirely on you.
I barely have time to sleep. How am I supposed to add therapy to my schedule?
1
Denise is in-network with Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Florida Blue, Meritain Health, Optum, and UnitedHealthcare, which means your sessions may cost little to nothing beyond your existing copay. Private pay and out of network options are also available. The free 15-minute consultation is a good place to sort out what that looks like for your specific plan before you commit to anything.
I cannot afford one more expense right now.

This is the most common thing caregivers say before they start. And it is also exactly why they need to. When everything is moving too fast to think, therapy is not another demand on your capacity. It is the one place where you stop managing and start making sense of what is actually happening. Most clients leave sessions feeling clearer, not more overwhelmed.
I am already juggling everything. I do not have the bandwidth to slow down and process.
3
I do not even know how to describe what I am feeling. Is that okay?
How does talking about this actually help anything? The situation is not going to change.

You are right that therapy will not change your loved one's diagnosis or make your family step up. What it changes is how much of yourself you are losing in the process. Caregivers who have support make better decisions, stay healthier longer, and are able to keep showing up in ways that matter to them. The situation may not change. How you are carrying it can.
Yes. Most caregivers who reach out cannot find the words yet. That is part of what therapy is for. You do not need to arrive with clarity. You just need to show up.
